Children’s Place, Disney Stores

The Children’s Place Retail Stores says it is talking to Walt Disney about acquiring the Disney Stores chain of 335 stores, Reuters reported. Apparel retailer Children’s Place said it would operate the units under a long-term license agreement that includes keeping the Disney name.

Kmart, Home Depot

Kmart Corp. says it will sell as many as 24 stores to The Home Depot for a maximum of $365 million. The discounter says it will establish the price and the precise number of units over the next month or two.

Nordstrom

Nordstrom plans to open its first department store in Hawaii, at General Growth Properties’ Ala Moana Center, Honolulu, in 2007. The chain currently operates 149 units in 27 states.

Zara

Zara opened its first West Coast store, at C.J. Segerstrom & Sons’ South Coast Plaza, in Costa Mesa, Calif. The Spanish apparel retailer already operates 10 units in the United States and more than 600 in 44 other countries.

Stride Rite

Shoe wholesaler Stride Rite opened its first Shoe Buzz unit, in S.R. Weiner & Associates’ Shoppes at Blackstone Valley, Millbury, Mass. The concept caters to children up to age 10, including infants. This year Stride Rite also plans to open two Shoe Buzz stores in the New York City metro area.

Bon-Ton

The Bon-Ton Stores says it will close its Pottstown, Pa., store on July 31. The company operates about 140 units in the Northeast and Midwest.

AMC

A 16-screen AMC theater is to open at The Mills Corp.’s Del Amo Fashion Center, Torrance, Calif. Construction begins in the fall. AMC operates 232 cinemas around the world.

Tiffany

Tiffany & Co. is opening a pair of two-level stores in Japan this year. The first opens in the Marunouchi area of Tokyo in September, followed in November by a unit in the Nishi-Umeda area of Osaka. The new units bring the number of Tiffany stores operating in Japan to 52.

Home Depot

The Home Depot plans to expand into Asia through its Home Depot Asia, which will be based in China. The company did not say how many stores it plans to open on the continent, or which countries it is targeting there. The chain currently operates about 1,760 units in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada and Mexico.

Wal-Mart

Wal-Mart Stores got approval to build its first store in Chicago, but failed to secure permission for a second unit there. Wal-Mart has nearly 5,000 units worldwide.
