GADZOOKS NOW WOMEN-ONLY

Gadzooks is now a seller of clothing and accessories for females only, having previously sold to both sexes. The chain says it made the move to reduce competition and improve sales.

SHOPKO TO TEST DRUGSTORE

ShopKo Stores has designed a new stand-alone drugstore prototype that it will begin rolling out next year. The chain currently has 360 discount stores in 23 states throughout the Midwest, Western mountain and Pacific Northwest regions.

MICHAELS EXPANDS NEW CONCEPT

Michaels Stores is expanding its wholesale store concept, Star Decorators Wholesale Warehouse, beyond the Dallas metropolitan area, where its headquarters is located, to Atlanta.

S&P RE-RATES GROCERS

Standard & Poor’s lowered Albertsons’ corporate rating from BBB+ to BBB and raised Kroger’s rating from BBB- to BBB, citing lowered cash flow expectations for the former and the “strong business profile” of the latter.

CABELA’S COMES TO PENNSYLVANIA

Outdoor sporting goods retailer Cabela’s will open a 250,000-square-foot store in Tilden Township, Pa., about 80 miles northwest of Philadelphia, on Sept. 18, its first in Pennsylvania. The store will feature a 12,000-square-foot trophy deer museum and a 55,000-gallon aquarium. The chain currently operates eight stores and two outlet stores in the West and the Midwest.

SAKS TO OPEN IN CHARLOTTE, N.C.

Saks will open its first Charlotte, N.C., store, an 82,000-square-foot stand-alone unit in a mixed-use project called The Village at Seven Eagles. The center is slated for completion in 2005.

GAP GETS NEARLY $2 BILLION

Gap obtained three-year credit facilities of just under $2 billion to replace a $1.4 billion facility that was set to expire in March 2004.

MARSHALL FIELD’S ADDS SPORT SHOP

The Marshall Field’s downtown Chicago flagship store opens a 900-square-foot sports merchandise shop this month called Wrigleyville Sports.
