Kate expands in spades

New York design company Kate Spade is growing in seemingly every direction, with an online store (www.katespade.com) set to open in November, as well as a rollout this fall of boutiques in Boca Raton, Fla.; King of Prussia, Pa.; Las Vegas; and Palo Alto, Calif. This past spring the purveyor of exuberant women’s fashions opened stores in Atlanta; Charlotte, N.C.; Dallas; and Houston, as well as in Aoyama, Japan. Most of these are freestanding stores, though some are in malls, such as the boutiques in Americana Manhasset (N.Y.) and NorthPark Center, Dallas.

Photo synthesis

Snapfish, the online photo development service, has opened a store at the Bradlee Shopping Center, a strip center in Alexandria, Va. “We recognize that many people also like to have their photo processing done at retail,” said Raj Kapoor, president and co-founder of Snapfish, in a news release. By going into a center, he added, the company is combining “the best of the retail concept with the leading online service.”

Amazon.communist China

Amazon.com is expanding into China by paying $75 million for Joyo.com, that country’s largest online retailer of books, music and videos. The deal comes on the heels of several other acquisitions by Western companies of online retailers in China, including eBay, Google and Yahoo. There are now more than 80 million Internet users in China, according to its government, and this is expected to grow to 110 million by the end of the year, The Associated Press reports.

Target these

Target.com has launched Red Hot Shop, a section on its Web site that features up to 10 particularly sought-after items. The list changes from week to week and may include anything from a garment to chocolates, from a golf bag to a perfume, the company says.

Savvy in Seattle

Technology evidently clicks with the bricks at Seattle’s Fisher Plaza. The downtown building, which combines high-tech space with retail, has just signed four tenants that plan to locate servers there and is bringing in five retailers, including a bridal boutique, a cheese shop and a café.
