CHICO’S KILLS PAZO

Chico’s has shut down the 10-unit Pazo chain, saying it wants to focus on its recent White House/Black Market acquisition. Pazo is the latest concept to be pulled by its parent in recent months. Limited Brands killed Mishmash, Charlotte Russe shut the door to Charlotte’s Room, and Charming Shoppes did away with Monsoon Accessorize.

ROSS TESTS DISCOUNT CONCEPT

Ross Stores, owner of the Ross Dress for Less chain, plans to launch 10 pilot stores selling discount-brand clothing by the second half of 2004. The new chain has yet to be named. The company operates 562 Ross Dress for Less stores in the United States.

OFFICEMAX BUY GETS ANTITRUST OK

Boise Cascade’s proposed $1.2 billion purchase of OfficeMax cleared the 30-day waiting period required under federal antitrust law. The parties expect to close the deal by year-end.

FAMILY DOLLAR EXPANDS

Family Dollar opened 475 units during the fiscal year ended Aug. 30. The discount chain had 5,027 stores in 43 states by the end of the period.

BORDERS GOES WIRELESS

Borders Books & Music plans to offer wireless Internet access to its customers by this holiday season. The service will be available for a 24-hour period to any café customer who buys a cup of coffee at any of the chain’s 420 stores. Wireless carrier T-Mobile will provide the technology.

NORDSTROM TO OPEN IN IRVINE, CALIF.

Nordstrom plans to open a 125,000-square-foot store at The Irvine Co.’s 832,000-square-foot Irvine (Calif.) Spectrum in the fall of 2005. The unit would be the retailer’s 19th in Southern California and its fifth in the Orange County area.

BASS PRO OPENS IN FORMER KMART

Bass Pro Shops will open a 119,000-square-foot store at Colonial Properties Trust’s Colonial Mall, Myrtle Beach, S.C., this spring. The store is to occupy a former Kmart space and will include a 10,000-square-foot Islamorada Fish Company restaurant.

AVANZA ENTERS CHICAGO

Nash Finch Co. opened its first Avanza supermarket in Chicago. Avanza is geared to Hispanics. The company already operates three in Colorado.

FAO INC. SELLS IN BORDERS, SAKS

Toy retailer FAO Inc. and Borders Books & Music have agreed to carry each other’s goods in their stores by this holiday season. FAO has also started selling goods from its FAO Schwarz, Right Start and Zany Brainy brands in some department stores owned by Saks Inc.

OFFICE DEPOT SELLS IN ALBERTSONS

Albertsons is carrying more than 700 Office Depot products in 18 of its stores in Chicago, Los Angeles and Phoenix. The company has made similar deals with Krispy Kreme and Toys ‘R’ Us.

EB GAMES PLANS TWO OHIO STORES

Electronics and video game retailer EB Games expects to open a store by year-end in North Court Shoppes, Medina, Ohio, about 35 miles south of Cleveland. The company also plans to open a unit in Levis Commons, Toledo, Ohio, next summer. EB Games has about 1,200 units worldwide.

KOHL’S GIVES $1 MILLION TO HOSPITAL

Kohl’s Department Stores gave $1 million to the volunteer services department of the Phoenix (Ariz.) Children’s Hospital. The money will go toward adding a summer program for teens, staff salaries and communications and equipment.
